Фильм выходил тогда, когда страна находилась в полной нищете и разрухе, когда одни пользовались этим и «хапали» и «приХватизировали», другие уезжали подальше из развалившейся страны, начиная всё сначала на чужбине, остальные же влачили жалкое существование в том, что осталось от СССР. Кто-то «поднялся» (об этом вы можете увидеть в не менее культовой «Бригаде»), кто-то не посмел встать на кривую дорожку, и с горечью ждал, когда же отдадут задержанную за полгода зарплату, и думал, как сейчас жить и кормить детей. Что же касается русского кинематографа того времени, то даже те, для кого работа — развлечение, не могли себе позволить сделать это развлечение полноценным для широкого зрителя, и кинофильмы были в лучшем случае сняты на природе (например, комедии про «особенности»), в худшем — в убого-нищенских декорациях с такой же съёмкой, особенно это касалось ТВ-фильмов. «Брат» снят хорошей камерой, на его картинку не противно смотреть, и не зря фильм вышел в качестве HD-DVD 1080, но, понятно дело, никаких спецэффектов, на которые русский зритель в те времена мог посмотреть только в видеосалонах в голливудских фильмах, здесь можно не ждать — Алексей Балабанов показал Россию такой, какой она была, со всей её нищетой и беднотой, словно заранее зная, что в будущем страна выйдет из кризиса, и следующее поколение будет смотреть этот фильм и мотать на ус, какой была страна когда-то.

Он показал историю обычного русского парня, который любит рок-музыку, любит родных и готов защищать справедливость даже там, где это опасно. Вернувшись из армии и уехав в культурную столицу, он начнёт своё дело с разборки в трамвае, где отпустит знаменитую пафосную фразу, которую подхватили многие русские кинозрители; затем защитит справедливость на рынке, а потом его ждёт опасная переделка, в которой замешан его брат, который не абы кто, а наёмный убийца, но, кем бы ни был этот человек, для Данилы Багрова это прежде всего брат, за которого можно и самому убить тех, кто этого заслуживает.

Алексей Балабанов был настоящим русским Тарантино: в его фильмах весь смак в диалогах. Прежде всего это касается данного фильма, и «Груза 200», в котором разные по характеру люди спорят о жизни так, что у зрителя кипит кровь безо всякого экшна, и жаль, что в последнем многие увидели только отвратные сцены, а не заметили сути. «Брат» — история о мужском русском характере, и глупо обвинять такой фильм в пафосе, особенно, если его здесь всего ничего (может, только фразу, сказанную в трамвае в адрес гастарбайтеров, и можно назвать пафосной), здесь нужно обращать внимание на смысловой сюжет и диалоги. Когда я не разбирался в диалогах, мне этот фильм показался устаревшим на сегодняшний день, а два года спустя я, пересмотрев этот фильм, понял, что не зря он является любимым фильмом солиста группы, песню которой я процитировал в рецензии (название группы умолчу). Музыкальное сопровождение в фильме тоже порадовало, хоть и не увлекаюсь роком. Хорошее добротное кино.
